 "OK" 2010-06-26
By Ellen Siu
I have been using this laptop for about 3 weeks, and it functions quite nicely. It's lightweight and easy to carry around. It also loads quickly. The only problems I have with this computer is that it overheats easily and the battery life is more like 3-4 hours than 5 hours. Also, at first I thought that the lack of a CD/DVD drive quite inconvenient, but since I don't really need to use one, it's ok. Oh, and the sound quality is pretty bad.

I'd say that you can get better laptops than this for the price, but I chose this one because the size was convenient.

Good choice for a novice who just needed a laptop for occasional remote usage. Easy to use, good battery life and light enough. And when I read the directions... I am sure I can maximize its features.

"DONT EVER BUY ANY HP NOTEBOOKS" 2010-06-05
By Benjamin Huang (Palo Alto, CA USA)
DONT EVER BUY HP OR THEIR SERVICE PLANS.

I recently purchased a HP DM3-1130US. With 330 days still on the warranty, the PC wont enter hibernation or shut off. You have to hold down the power button to manually turn it off.

Today I spent 3 hours with HP technical support.

First tech, Chris, had me run CHKDSK, which took 2 hours. Of course that didn't work and I had to call back. The second tech, Mohammad, took control of my desk top and upgraded BIOS. Of course that didn't work and I told him that had little chance of working.

The third one, Pravin, promised to link me to the supervisor if I give him the model number and serial number, after I gave him the case number. He broke his promise.

DONT EVER BUY HP OR THEIR SERVICE PLANS. Imagine paying more for such service.

 "HP ROCKS" 2010-05-21
By J. Cardenas Rodriguez (Texas)
This machine was obtained as a gift, to replace a 3 years old compaq laptop. Until today I am amazed about the configuration of this laptop. It makes me happy, solid material outside, and the software (W7) inside runs like water on a river. NO COMPLAINS. It works 16 hours a day every day, some times shutdown, others hibernate mode, and it gives 100%. I watch movies , download stream music, make homework with MS office, edit homemade videos with WMovie Maker, I use the most efective antivirus, It runs warm, never hot (even outside the house), I recommend you use an external HDD for those programs or information you can use for a short period of time (a day or two), even should try to erase the information, not only delete. Anothers machines more expensive are better, but this piece deserves 5 stars. Thank you HP, and AMAZON.COM ( I hope it works fine 3 years or more). Greetings

"Sharp, Light, Slim notebook but a bit underpowered" 2010-04-23
By R. Petersen (Milwaukee, WI)
So, a couple of months ago I picked up this laptop and figured I'd write down my impressions. For the most part, I'm very happy with my purchase. It's a slim, light weight laptop with a flashy aluminum case and the performance to do most all of my every day tasks (and maybe just a little bit more)

I could probably fill a thesis on the device, but instead I'll just break it down simple so you can make the call on whether it's right for you. Keep in mind that since I've not owned this for a long period of time, I cannot vouch for it's long-term use.

PROS:

- Phenomenal look and size. It's your typical 13'3 laptop in terms of dimensions, but the aluminum casing, the black keys, sharp screen and good choice in layout of buttons, USB ports, etc...make this one of the best looking slim laptops on the market and a steal considering the price you'll pay for others in the same size and weight category.

- Very light, but sturdy; If weight is a big factor in your purchase, you'll like this laptop.

- Decent hardware specs for a travel & work. You're looking at an AMD 1.6GHz dual core, with 3GB of RAM, just under 300GB of useable disk storage space (265GB, if you subtract OS + the default software installed) and an ATI HD 3200 video card. The video card doesn't have any discrete memory, so it's not well suited for most modern gaming, but still a step up Intel GMA series you find on most $500-range notebooks.

- Good feel on the keyboard and comfortable to type on for long periods. The look takes cues from the Mac Book, though it does so convincingly.

- Monitor is sharp, bright and clear.

- Laptop runs nice and quiet during daily use.

- Battery life is decent. Count on roughly 4 hours, though you're mileage may vary depending on usage.

CONS:

- No CD/DVD drive. Though you can basically get by without one these days, if you you're one to watch DVDs on your computer and don't care to plunk down another $50 on an external USB drive, then keep looking. This fact is a bit amusing though, as you'll find that the lack of a drive still didn't prevent HP from shipping the laptop with a full suite of DVD/CD playback & burning/ripping software O_o

- The laptop compromises horsepower for top-of-the-line looks, style and size, so don't bother with this if you need a modern gaming machine or something capable of serious number crunching. The AMD/ATI chipset will play games 3+ years back just fine, but anything newer than that and you may end up rethinking your purchase.

- The mouse pad has a silvery/polished finish leaves smudges, can be non responsive when you have sweaty hands, and has a gesture interface that is just annoying (I disabled it after about a day) - Pads on a select few laptops are good enough to make you forget about your mouse, but this won't be one of them.

- For what I would presume were size reasons, the media keys (volume, brightness, etc...) are the same as the F1-F12 keys. Perfectly fine at first glance, till you realize that the media key is the default, and the FN key is required to access F1-F12. Somewhat frustrating when you hit just F5 on a web page to refresh and it locks your computer instead.

- Normal bloatware - Expect to spend the first hour or two uninstalling all the crap that HP puts on it.

- They claim 6 hours of battery life on the tech specs & packaging/labeling, but that it's a bit disingenuous. Like I said above, 4 hours is really what you can expect to get with a normal work use.

Anyway...in spite of the criticisms, I've very happy with my purchase. Nothing I described deterred me from making the decision that this was the right computer for me. I scored mines for $550 + Tax after comparing for a week and playing around with this one for the better part of an hour at the store.

If you like small laptops with respectable specs at a very reasonable price, then do consider it.

Prós: Leve, bonito, rápido para um Dual, tela muito boa.

 "Good notebook" 2010-04-01
By G. K. Gibson (Apex, NC)
I'm quite pleased with this notebook. It is thin and light. The performance is great. I had trouble with the touch pad and the video. HP Support initially gave me bad information about the fixes for both problems, but the touch pad problem was eventually fixed by getting a BIOS update and the video problem was fixed by a video driver update.

 "Looks cool, otherwise useless" 2010-03-19
By buy less, live more
looks cool, that's about it. get's hot, uncomfortably warm on the wrist rests. and it's slow. and the speakers are weak. and there's a ton of bloatware. screen is very reflective. feels fragile. battery life more like 5 hours than the advertised 10. blah. the screen dims and brightens on it's own and the inaccurate trackpad pretty much solidify this as a useless piece. Returned after 3 days. I just got this Acer Aspire AS5740-6025. so far so good.

Fast, lots of options (wireless N, bluetooth, 4GB Ram, remote control, HDMI, 4 USB ports, Dual Headphone ports, webcame and integrated microphone array).

I also think its one of the better looking laptops when kept clean. HD video plays great, and Windows 7 works like a charm.

"Extremely weak product support! Not recommended" 2010-05-27
By Emre Kekec (United States)
I am a software engineer who has used a variety of brands. I got a 3 month old DV6t-2000 i7 quad core with 8GB RAM for development purposes. I trusted in HP brand and bought this computer to see that there is absolutely no support. The computers GET issues from time to time, a well performing computer does not necessarily mean that it is a good product.

The support department is going to offer you to replace the whole panel and reformat the PC if one of your key-caps(in my case up arrow) gets loose or broken. You will have to leave your PC to service department for at least a month if you have warranty, and if your warranty is over may God help you since your will have to pay several hundred dollars. There is absolutely 0 initiative, and prepare to talk to human robots. I went up to their CEO! and could not get a resolution. Managers are arrogant and chooses to fight with the customer instead of offering solutions.

I am an IT expert and strongly suggest advanced and novice users to stay away from HP as far as possible...

05/27/2010

After sending several emails and hours spent on the phone calls, I could get the support department to resolve the issue. However, they sent a whole keyboard panel. So, it seems, once the warranty period is over, I would have to pay for the panel. It is a powerful computer , yet the support is still weak.

"Disappointed in some features but overall it's good product" 2010-05-22
By ericatdallas (Dallas, Texas USA)
I'm a big fan of HP products. I've owned 4 HP notebooks and 3 printers over the last 10 years. I've also owned a Dell, Averatec, and Toshiba laptop over the same time period.

Pros:

1) Numeric keypad. The keys are a little slimmer than keypads on other notebooks (i.e. Toshiba and Sony models) but it isn't too hard to get used to. I use this a lot.

2) Good battery life. I haven't fully drained it yet, but it looks like it's at least 3 hours/.

3) Runs cool. I can use it for hours on my lap and it doesn't experience the heating issue my previous HP and Averatec laptops ran into.

4) Overall, for a budget laptop, the overall build feels like a good quality.

5) eSATA

6) Remote - I never use these, but I may this time since it also has a HDMI output.

Cons:

1) The BIOS is locked. This is kind of annoying. I don't mean you can't get into it, but merely, some of the features or options aren't made available. I've never seen a BIOS this limited (and I've owned a lot of notebooks [see above] and desktop systems. This probably won't matter to most people though.

2) As odd as it sounds, HP technical support told me it won't support a SATA SSD. I've read some laptops have problems with this.. I haven't actually tried this myself but I probably will. I'm hoping HP support just doesn't know what they're talking about and just don't see it in the supported hardware list.

3) When the notebook goes into sleep mode, I get weird horizontal lines that forces me to reboot. I've tried refreshing the display, having it output to an external display, changing resolution, etc - but those methods don't work. This may just be my laptop or a driver issue.

4) Easy to get fingerprints all over it (probably due to HP's finish).

5) Dust seems to be very noticeable on HP's finish

Notes/Neutral:

1) Doesn't utilize a latch on the lid to lock it in place. The lid close tightly though.

2) No USB or other I/O ports on back of laptop. It only has 3 USB ports.

3) Power cable is on the right side of the laptop towards the back.

4) Audio ports are on the front right and there are two headphone jacks. This seems fairly typical of a lot of HP notebooks but I've never had to use it. Still nice to have.

5) There is a docking station expansion port on the left. Haven't tried it yet (don't own a dock), but at least you know it's compatible with a docking station.

6) No modem. This doesn't bother me but for those of you who still use dial-up might want to know this.

7) Does come with 802.11n and works as expected.

Overall, I think this is a good notebook for a student or someone like me who doesn't do much with his notebook but tosses and abuses it a lot during travel.

UPDATE: 14 June 2010

Okay, so I bought a OCZ 60GB SSD. I didn't think it seemed right that I couldn't upgrade to it, so I figured it was a calculated risk. Anyway, the SSD works fine. There are a few issues to consider though... The recovery DVD you made will not install to a smaller drive, so you'll need something like Norton Ghost to do it. I looked into using free utilities and couldn't find any (i.e. Clonezilla, Partition Wizard, etc). Or, you need to buy a regular copy of Windows 7 and install it from scratch.

The boot times do improve significantly. I don't know if it's worth it, but my laptop now completely boots up in about 30 seconds. Applications start almost immediately. However, I would probably avoid the upgrade again only because I miss having the drive space.

Also keep in mind, if you do upgrade to a SSD to optimize it. There are a few tutorials online that tell you how to edit your registry to get the most out of it.

This also means HP tech support loses a star since they told me it wasn't possible.

While I was reloading the factory install, I did notice that there is a minimal install of the OS. It does come with some HP utilities, but a lot less. So I definitely recommend that you re-install if you don't like having too many applications preloaded. It takes about an hour.

 "Great Laptop! Greater Value!" 2010-05-14
By A. Ahmed
I've had this laptop for 3 weeks now and I love it!

The best part is the processor. It makes everything run so smoothly. The 4GB of RAM only helps that. The screen looks great and can be adjusted to your preference. The keyboard is nice and "clicky." The number pad is extremely useful. I have used to this laptop heavily with multi-tasking and other stuff and it keeps up with no problem whatsoever.

It's starts up in about a minute. That includes the time it takes me to type in my password. The battery is giving me about 2 hours which might not be great but it's not horrible. It's dead quiet and even under the most intense usage the fan never seems to need to run high. And it stays cool. Also, it's very lightweight. I don't carry it around too much but every time I pick it up it always surprises me how light it is. I upgraded from an HP dv1000 that had a 14" screen and was thin and light and this is just as light.

I would recommend this laptop to anyone and everyone. The value is nothing short of a steal.

"Avoid these at all cost" 2010-03-06
By Thomas E. Lucas
I will have to mirror the comments of other people here and on other sites: The motherboards on these are inferior, last 12 to 14 months, and HP will not stand behind their mistakes. You will eat it. After a year you will be left with a quite expensive paperweight. Unless, of course, you pay 600 bucks to have it repaired, only to fail in another year. HP has lost a lot of customers over this piece of junk. BTW, I did not purchase mine from Amazon, but that doesn't matter. The retailers are not at fault. It's HP.

 "Design failure" 2009-12-31
By James E. Gibson
Like hundreds of others my hp tx2000 computer failed after 14 months of use. The problem -- the machine overheats causing a failure in the Nvidia chip. The computer will not boot even though several indicator lights flash. HP knows of the problem but refuses to acknowledge it as a manufacture's defect. It's only solution is to replace the motherboard for nearly $400.00. You will find a wealth of similar consumer complaints on the net.

Do not buy this computer.

"This my LAST HP EVER" 2009-12-11
By S. Moreland (FL United States)
I use to be an HP evangelist, it was the only PC I bought. After the frustration I have had with the TX2000 I will never buy another. This is especially true after reading the problem so many others have had. There is even a pedition with over 1,400 signatures: [...]. After awhile, the power comes on but all you get is a blank screen. Even when it was running it was terribly slow.

"Cool concept but you get shafted" 2008-04-15
By WooWoo (Fairview, OR United States)
This is actually a nice tablet. The build quality is good and the features are impressive, but after using it I realized my much older notebook performs better.

I got this to be a car pc, after shopping around I decided the HP was the best tablet to get. The touch screen is good and allows for finger manipulation. But the processor sucks, the battery life stinks, and multitasking is so so. Trying to justify the cost when I already have a 2.5 year old 14" notebook the out performs it is hard.

So if you need a tablet, and don't have a computer of any kind then sure buy it, other than that it's a waste of money. HP should have used a better processor and chipset. It would have made this a must have.
